How much money do you have to start with? Do you have any experience in any particular area? I’m going to assume you have no money and no experience and want to make a lot of money fast so here goes nothing: A) Check out the jobs section in the local newspaper/magazine B) Call a painter, plumber, carpenter, electrician and a person who can contribute in all four like a handyman. C) Try them out in small jobs for friends and family. D) If they are good and on time make them your partners and start a company. (this way is less risky because you wont pay salaries.) *alternatively you could hire them with a fixed salary which should be cheaper but you will have to pay them every month unless you manage to convince them to only get money if there is business.(negotiate be firm but fair but most of all show them you are confident that your business will grow) E) Aim to get 3 projects at least in the first 4-6 months to validate the business before you think about investing any money in the business.(they can be friends and family too or you can have your friends and family tell their network about you) F) Identify other contractors who are just as good if not better than you and subcontract some of the jobs to them or try to negotiate a percentage for hooking them up with a client from your side if you want to give them full responsibility and focus on your existing projects. (this could be huge for you a lot of contractors live of this) G) Start hiring more people and try getting designers and project managers, they will be more expensive but they will help you a lot and make sure your work looks good and finishes on time. (a small minority of contractors finish on time so if you just finish on time people will come ) H) Don’t overcommit and get more work than you can handle ever! this could destroy your image and make your life very difficult too. If you are good people will want you and they will do anything to have you work with them, make sure this doesn’t change unless you want to destroy your life/business. (a project every six to eight weeks is acceptable anything more than that is going to be tricky) I) Get a good lawyer that has experience working with startups especially construction and have him/her draft contracts for all of your agreements with clients, employees & partners/investors. * Ideally this should be higher on the list as it is very important but good lawyers are expensive and you need money to pay them. (please don’t ignore this as there always conflicts in business but contracting especially everyone will try to hurt you) J) Print business cards and share with other contractors, clients as well as friends and family. You can also build a Facebook page and ask your friends and family and to like/share your page you should get to 100 likes in no time and then try to push to get at least 1000 likes in a month or so. K) Start hiring people to run the business side of things you will need help in marketing/sales plus accounting, so you can keep focusing on quality while your company is growing. (Consider hiring an experienced manager at this stage to manage the company instead of you while you focus on growth) L) Make sure your most important people are happy and doing their jobs properly and make sure everyone is focussed on their job M) Look for a investor to help you grow, find someone who has experience and is extremely patient. (this is optional) N) Stick with that person for at least a year or two and try to repay their faith in you by helping them make money and try to fulfill any promises you might have given to them in order to invest in you and your company. O) Consider whether you want to continue in this business or sell it to others. Ideally you should talk to your partners/investors first before you make your final decision so they can replace you (you could be the person who is in charge of getting the replacement) P) Email me and tell me what really happened. . . . Good Luck it’s simple but not easy at all 0 Share Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedIn Share on WhatsApp You must login to can add an answer.
