On-Demand Mail Relay (ODMR) is a protocol designed to facilitate the delivery of email for users with intermittent internet connectivity or those who are behind restrictive firewalls that prevent direct SMTP connections. It is an extension of the SMTP protocol, aimed at users who, for various reasons, cannot maintain a persistent connection to their mail server.
The essence of ODMR is that it allows a mail server to hold onto email messages for a client until the client initiates a connection and requests the mail to be delivered. This is particularly useful for remote or mobile users who connect to the internet sporadically or have limited bandwidth, as it enables them to send and receive email as though they had a continuous connection.
Here’s how it basically works:
1. Email Accumulation: Emails intended for the ODMR-enabled recipient are collected and stored on the recipient’s SMTP server, rather than being delivered immediately.
2. On-Demand Connection: The recipient uses a specific client that supports ODMR to initiate a connection to their SMTP server. This connection request is the trigger for the server to begin relaying the stored emails to the client.
3. Mail Relay: Upon the client’s request, the SMTP server starts relaying the accumulated emails to the client. This process continues until all stored emails are dispatched to the client.
ODMR can be seen as a solution for optimizing email delivery for users in specific scenarios where connectivity is a challenge. It reduces the need for continuous online presence for
