On-Demand Mail Relay (ODMR) is a protocol or mechanism designed for email delivery, particularly useful for users who have intermittent or unpredictable Internet connectivity. This protocol allows these users to send and receive email messages even though they are not constantly connected to the internet.
The way ODMR works is by keeping the outgoing emails in a queue and then, when the user establishes an internet connection, these emails are sent out automatically. Similarly, any incoming email is relayed to the user’s server once a connection is detected. This process ensures that email communication can still be efficient and timely, regardless of connectivity issues.
ODMR is particularly beneficial for remote users, mobile workers, or anyone operating in environments where internet connectivity is not guaranteed to be stable or continuous. By using ODMR, these users can ensure their email communication is not hindered by their connectivity constraints.
As of my last update, ODMR might not be widely mentioned in contemporary discussions about email delivery, as advancements in internet connectivity and the prevalence of mobile data and Wi-Fi have made always-on connections more common. However, ODMR or similar mechanisms might still find relevance in specific niche applications or in areas where internet infrastructure remains limited.
