The invention of punched cards is attributed to Joseph Marie Jacquard, who developed the Jacquard loom in 1804. This loom used punched cards to control the weaving of patterns in textiles. However, the concept of using punched cards for data processing was further developed by Charles Babbage for his Analytical Engine in the 1830s and later by Herman Hollerith for tabulating data for the 1890 U.S. Census.
