The windings used in the split phase motor starting method are typically referred to as:
1. Main or Running Winding: This winding has lower resistance and higher inductance, and it is designed to provide the bulk of the motor’s power during normal operation.
2. Start or Auxiliary Winding: This winding has higher resistance and lower inductance compared to the main winding, and it’s used only during the start phase to create a phase difference with the main winding. This difference in phase helps in producing the requisite rotating magnetic field necessary to start the motor. After the motor reaches a certain speed, the start winding is usually disconnected from the circuit by means of a centrifugal switch or an electronic controller.
