The protocol that maintains neighbor adjacencies is the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol. OSPF is a widely used interior gateway protocol in large enterprise networks. It is a link-state routing protocol that maintains a map of the network topology in the form of a link-state database from which it then determines the best path between any two nodes using the Shortest Path First (SPF) algorithm. Neighbor adjacencies are a fundamental aspect of OSPF operation, as routers using OSPF establish connections with adjacent routers to exchange routing information. OSPF routers send “Hello” packets to discover and maintain adjacency with neighboring routers.
