On-Demand Mail Relay (ODMR) is an email delivery method designed to assist users behind a firewall or with a dynamic IP address in sending emails. Normally, when sending an email, your email server directly sends the message to the recipient’s email server. However, this can be challenging if your server’s IP address changes frequently (as it does with many residential internet connections) or if your network is behind a firewall that restricts outgoing connections on the standard email port (TCP port 25).
ODMR helps overcome these challenges by allowing the email server to establish a connection to an intermediary mail server (the ODMR server) when it needs to send an email. This is often done using SMTPS or Submission (typically on port 587 or 465, which are less frequently blocked by ISPs). The ODMR server then queues the email and delivers it to the recipient’s email server on behalf of the original sender. This relaying process helps in reducing the possibility of the email being marked as spam, which is common for emails sent from dynamic IP addresses or ranges known to be used by residential ISPs.
In essence, ODMR provides a method for email servers to reliably send emails even when they face restrictions due to network configurations, firewalls, or IP reputation issues. It’s particularly useful for small businesses or home users who run their own mail servers but don’t have a static IP address or are unable to send emails directly due to ISP restrictions.
