On-Demand Mail Relay (ODMR) is a protocol designed to support asynchronous email delivery over intermittent internet connections. It falls under the broader category of SMTP-based email delivery protocols, and its primary purpose is to facilitate email delivery in situations where a direct and constant connection to the internet is not available or not reliable. This is especially useful in remote areas or for mobile users who might not always have stable access to the internet.
ODMR works by temporarily storing outgoing emails on a local server or client application until an internet connection becomes available. Once the connection is established, the protocol automatically initiates a connection to the designated SMTP server to relay the stored emails. The process is designed to operate transparently to the user, ensuring that emails are delivered as soon as a viable connection is present without requiring manual intervention.
This approach not only helps in managing bandwidth more efficiently but also ensures that email communication can continue in less than optimal networking environments, thereby enhancing the accessibility and reliability of email services for users in challenging locations or with limited internet access.
